Different brushes for different dogs and needs.
You need to take the breed of your dog and the type of fur your dog has into consideration when you go to buy a brush. Some brushes wont have any effect on shorter haired dogs, as where others may work well on just about any fur length.
A Pin Brush is used more for untangling fur and mats in fur, they are usually un-useful for short haired dogs. A Bristle Brush is used for finishing up the coat, as it helps to smooth and shine your dogs coat. Ideally you'll want to get a double-sided brush, that has the pin brush on one side and bristle brush on the other.
Some things to keep in mind
You should be brushing your dogs hair every few days as a normal maintenance, no matter the length of your dogs fur, think of it like how you brush your hair every day
Keep an idea out for your dogs fur getting mats in it, you may need to brush your dogs hair for a more specific purpose, more often
Keep in mind in the Spring/Summer that your dog will be shedding more then during the cooler seasons, you may want to brush your dog more frequently to help them shed their winter coat
